Harry Potter, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland– these literary characters all have one thing in common: they possess the special kind of magic to take us on an adventure that can create childhood memories. Even as an adult, when all else fails, we can rely on the magical words of J.K. Rowling, Roald Dahl and other authors of children’s books for a little comfort and escapism.
But what is it that makes a great hero or heroine in children's literature?
Why is fantasy such a dominant genre in children’s literature and how do these books reflect (or challenge) societal norms like gender roles or family structures?
Should children’s books teach morals or just tell a good story?
